Denis Gordon

If Saddam had died of a "heart attack" in his cell, or popped a poison capsule like a treed fascist; or if the leaked video had shown him shivering in fear as he faced his doom (as one eyewitness reported prior to the release of the video, which clearly showed otherwise) then the spin on his legacy would have been much easier to contain.

If the Michael Richards cell phone video ended his career, Saddam`s has catapulted him to dignified martyrdom at the hands of a mob. Defiant to the end; cursing the Americans and Persians and Shiite tormentors; yet reportedly polite to his American captors and composed on the gallows.

He obviously had a better grasp of how to leave a legacy than the collection of little men who`ve spent billions of dollars and thousands of lives to ensure it. Saddam got justice, but he also got the last laugh.
