By Fayeofori Teke Amabibi (Buea - October 1992)
The Clamour, the howls
The fire, the smoke
Then the batons, the bullets
And the maiming
Run for cover! Run for cover!
And now the calm
Empty streets, markets and parks
No ruffles – very peaceful
Too peaceful
Then the midnight meetings
Secret reunions to plan,
To conspire, to prepare
To out-maneuver the foe.
Now the chanting, the rhetoric
Accusations and counter-accusations
Their lies and flattery
The raising of hope – just to win;
“Just Make sure you win … do anything
Just make sure you win”
Then the verdict! Followed by
The fury, the fire, the smoke
The arrests, the confinement…
It’s the coming of an ideal
From overseas
An ideal called … Democracy
You’re welcome
