The UK National Archives has created a collection of interesting African colonial era pictures on its Flickr page.
Can you identify these members of the Southern Cameroons House of Representatives (1956)? (c) National Archives UK
The pictures, taken mainly by colonial staff, are part of a collection titled "Africa Through a Lens". According to the archives, “ In many instances we know little about the people or contents of the photographs and this is one of the reasons why we have published them online and asked people to comment and share their knowledge."
Of particular interest here are pictures from the British Southern Cameroons which provide a rare visual insight into the socio-political and economic life of that UN trust territory prior to the February 1961 plebiscite which led to the merger with the French Cameroons. The Cameroons picture set also includes some images from British Northern Cameroons, which unlike its Southern counterpart, instead voted to become part of the Federal Republicof Nigeria during the February 1961 plebiscite.
