Another Baobab has Fallen! Playwright Sankie Maimo is No More

Sankie Maimo, one of the foremost English speaking writers in Cameroon, has died. He died on September 4, 2013 at the St. Elisabeth hospital Shisong in the Northwest Region of Cameroon - a monumental loss for Cameroon Anglophone literature. Find below Maimo's biography written by Joyce Ashuntantang and I, which apppeared in the French language daily Le Jour in October 2008 as part of a series on writers from English-speaking Cameroon.

In 1959, Sankie Maimo (born in 1930), published the first known work of fiction by an Anglophone Cameroonian with the Ibadan University Press in Nigeria titled I am vindicated. Maimo’s later works include a children's book titled Adventuring with Jaja (1962), Sov-Mbang the Soothsayer (1968), The Mask (1970), Succession in Sarkov (1981), Sasse Symphony (1989) and Retributive Justice (1992).

Sov-Mbang the Soothsayer was the first English book ever published by Editions CLE, the main publisher in Cameroon for several years. In fact, CLE did not publish another book by an Anglophone Cameroonian for nearly three decades. The lack of access of Anglophone writers to CLE is one of the reasons why Anglophone Cameroon literature failed to develop at the same pace with Francophone literature.

Maimo’s works often deal with history for he believes that “the past is with us and helps us to fully understand the present”. Yet he often injects social satire when he deals with themes like the clash of tradition and the modern, the role of the individual in society etc. However, what marks Maimo’s works is the poetry that flows in his use of language. In fact he has often been criticized for being an elitist writer, a label he is not afraid to accept. As he has often explained “I normally address myself to the people and particularly the enlightened few who can inform the others”.

Sov-Mbang the Soothsayer was used as a prescribed text at the University of Yaounde for several years and Succession in Sarkov was produced for the stage and Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV) by The Flame Players, a professional theater troupe by Anglophone Cameroonians that was very active in the mid-eighties and early nineties.

Sankie Maimo lived in Nigeria from 1949 to 1966 where he was a teacher of English and Mathematics. Like a number of Anglophone Cameroonian writers who have also published literary works in Nigeria journals without acknowledgement of their nationality, Maimo has more than once been mistaken for a Nigerian writer by cataloguers and critics.

En 1959, Sankie Maimo (né en 1930) publia I am Vindicated, le premier recueil de fiction connu, écrit par un écrivain Camerounais Anglophone, à Ibadan University Press. Les œuvres subséquentes de Maimo comportent un livre pour enfant, Adventuring with Jaja (1962), mais aussi Sov-Mbang the Soothsayer (1968), The Mask (1970), Succession in Sarkov (1981), Sasse Symphony (1989), et Retributive Justice (1992).

Sov-Mbang the Soothsayer est le tout premier livre écrit en anglais publié par les Editions Clé, qui pendant plusieurs années auront été le principal éditeur au Cameroun. En fait les Editions Clé ne publieront un livre écrit par un auteur Anglophone que trois décennies plus tard. Le manque d’accès des auteurs Anglophones aux Editions Clé est l’une des raisons qui expliquent pourquoi la littérature Camerounaise d’expression anglaise ne se sera pas développée au même rythme que celle d’expression française.

L’œuvre de Maimo est surtout ancrée dans la conviction que ‘le passé est avec nous et nous aide à mieux comprendre le présent.’ En même temps il y injecte des gestes de satire sociale, surtout quand il traite de thèmes comme le conflit entre la tradition et la modernité, le rôle de l’individu dans la société, etc. Ce qui marque cependant son œuvre c’est la poésie qui transparait dans sa maitrise de la langue. Dire qu’il a plusieurs fois été critique comme élitiste, un label qu’il n’a pourtant jamais eu peur d’accepter. Comme il l’expliqua, ‘je m’adresse au peuple, et tout particulièrement au peu de gens éclairés qui peuvent informer les autres.’

Sov-Mbang the Soothsayer a été introduit dans les curriculums de l’Université de Yaoundé pendant de nombreuses années, et Succession in Sarkov a été mis en scène par la Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV), par The Flame Players, une troupe professionnelle de Camerounais Anglophones qui durant les années quatre-vingt et au début des années quatre-vingt dix était très active sur les planches.
Sankie Maimo a vécu au Nigeria de 1949 à 1966, travaillant comme professeur d’anglais et de mathématiques. Comme beaucoup d’écrivain Camerounais Anglophones qui ont publié de nombreuses œuvres dans des journaux nigérians sans cependant afficher leur nationalité, Maimo a plusieurs fois été présenté comme étant un Nigérian, dans des catalogues, des anthologies et par des critiques.
